Wake Up Your Mind was released in 1978, the year after FESTAC, so it's unsurprising that it finds in a pan-Africanist mood. In the music,one can hear echoes of Stevie Wonder, Kool & the Gang, Mighty Sparrow and even KC & the Sunshine Band's Bahamian junkanoo-inspired disco, as the lyrics exhort the unity of the African disapora. The album is definitely designed for maximum crossover effect, but Haastrup has never been
shy about his ambitions to transcend theconventional ideas of what an African musician should sound like
"[We need to] show the African musician as an artist first, then as an African... We can be pop, we can be rock, we can be jazz, we can be
soul, we can be everything because in actual fact we have [made] an incredible contribution
to all of that already. So why deny ourselves, or why deny us, the opportunity to cross over into the commercial industry."
Tinariwen is a Tuareg group that performs in a Middle Eastern/African. All of the musicians originate from the southern Sahara, the group's name, meaning "empty places," is a reflection of their land of origin. The band formed in the rebel camps of Colonel Ghadaffi, as each of the musicians had been forced from their nomadic lifestyle into involuntary military service. Surrounded by a displaced nation of their peers, Tinariwen forged a new style of music, trading their traditional lutes and shepherd's flutes for electric guitars and drums. The style that resulted was dubbed "Tishoumaren," or "the music of the unemployed." Tinariwen signed to America's Anti imprint in 2010. The label encouraged them to experiment. The end result is Tassili, issued in 2011, in which the band recorded completely acoustically in a protected region of the Southeastern Algerian Desert. The tapes were flown to America where guitarist Nels Cline overdubbed electric guitars and New Orleans' famed Dirty Dozen Brass Band added horns, making Tassili a truly international collaboration.

It will chronicle and showcase the lives and work of some of the leading exponents of the various musical movements that spawned Afrobeat, Juju, Apala, Highlife and Fuji music."

Pure Gold Afrobeat!! Fanga σημαίνει δύναμη στην Dioula, μια διάλεκτο από τις πολλές που υπάρχουν στην Δυτική Αφρική. Οι Fanga είναι ένα επταμελές group από την Γαλλία με κοινό στοιχειό την αγάπη τους για το Afrobeat, την παγκόσμια πλέον μουσική γλώσσα που δίδαξε σ΄ όλο τον κόσμο ο Fela Kuti. Βασιζόμενοι λοιπόν, στο κλασικό Αfrobeat και εμπλουτίζοντας το με κάθε είδους στοιχεία από την Αφρικάνικη παράδοση μαζί μ΄ ένα ηλεκτρονικό μείγμα από Jazz και Funk, οι πρωτεργάτες του group, ο Hip Hop καλλιτέχνης Serge Amiano και ο rapper Yses Khoury aka Korbo από τους Burkina Faso δημιουργούν μια καταιγιστική μουσική πανδαισία από Afrofunky ήχους. Ebo Taylor Bio: "The exceptional guitar player is considered as one of the most distinguished Highlife, Afro beat and jazz composers of Ghana. Between 1962 and 1965 he studied together with his friend Fela Kuti at the renowned Eric Guilder School of Music in London. As early as the 50th and 60th he caused quite a sensation as the head of the Stargazers Dance Band as well as the Broadway Band. In the early 70th he headed the best known Big Band of Ghana, the “Uhuru Band” (later called Uhurus) and so formed the Highlife.Since the 70th Taylor produced different albums as solo artist and developed more and more his own, innovative and distinctive style – recognisable for instance on his albums “Ebo Taylor and the Pelicans” or “Twer Nyame”. Ebo has been very active in numerous projects as session musician. Besides his solo works, he contributed significantly to the development of music in Ghana, as arranger and producer to the big labels in Ghana, like Essiebons and Gapophone. For these labels, being their musical director, he produced i.e. well known musicians such as C.K. Mann as well as the Apagya Show Band, a legendary All-Star-Highlife-Funk-Band, or artists like Pat Thomas, Jewel Ackah and Papa Yankson."

O κινηματογραφιστής και παραγωγός Leigh Iacobucciεμπνευσμένος από το καταπληκτικό Blog Voodoo Funk του Frank Gossner ετοιμάζει ένα από τα πιο ενδιαφέροντα φίλμ των τελευταίων χρόνων για την Αφρικάνικη μουσική.
Αυτό είναι κατά την προσωπική μου άποψη το label της χρονιάς! Το νέο του project είναι Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou - Analog Africa No4 από τα καλύτερα, αν όχι το καλύτερο άλμπουμ για το 2008. Με βάση την Φρανκφούρτη ένας καταπληκτικός τύπος που ακούει στο όνομα Samy Ben Redjeb μας προσφέρει εδώ και τρία χρόνια μερικές από τις καλύτερες παράγωγες της Αφρικής. Χαμένες ηχογραφήσεις ξαναέρχονται στη επιφάνεια δίνοντας μας μερικές από τις πιο υπέροχες μουσικές απολαύσεις της σύγχρονης μουσικής. Από αυτό εδώ το Blog σας παρουσιάσαμε (Απρίλης 2008) το label από τις πρώτες κιόλας στιγμές του, η τελευταία αυτή παράγωγη είναι σίγουρα και η καλύτερη! Ελπίζουμε αυτή η προσπάθεια να συνεχίσει, για να απολαμβάνουμε και άλλες σπουδαίες μουσικές από την υπέροχη αφρικανική μουσική πολυρυθμία! Τον Δεμεμβρη του 2008 ο Samy Ben Redjeb έκανε ένα καταπληκτικό mix αποκλειστικά για το περιοδικό Wire, το οποίο σας το παρουσιάζουμε παρακάτω, καθώς και ένα υπέροχο Video από τους Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou για το Gbeti Madjro.
Mulatu Astatke. Ο γίγαντας της Αιθιοπίας . Ο βασιλιάς της Ethio-Jazz. Γεννημένος το 1945 στην δυτική πόλη της Αιθιοπίας Jimma. Σπούδασε στα καλύτερα μουσικά πανεπιστήμια του κόσμου και ήταν ο πρώτος Αφρικανός σπουδαστής στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Berkley στις ΗΠΑ. Στην Ελλαδα άγνωστος έως ότου οι περισσότεροι τον γνωρίσουν από το Soundtrack της ταινίας Broken Flowers του Jim Jarmusch. Ο Mulatu Astatke ανήκει σε μια κατηγορία μουσικών οι οποίοι στην Ελλάδα είναι υπό εξορία, εκτός των μουσικών περιοδικών (εξαιρέσεις λίγες που υπάρχουν για να επιβεβαιώνουν τον κανόνα) εκτός των ''trendy'' εκτός και των ''ψαγμένων". Μόνο αν κάποιο θαύμα συμβεί κάποιοι θα ασχοληθούν μαζί τoυς. Στον υπόλοιπο κόσμο τα πράγματα είναι διαφορετικά, ο Brian Eno ο νονός της Εlectonica, δηλώνει "η σύγχρονη μουσική έχει πρόβλημα και το το πρόβλημα αυτό εντοπίζεται στο ότι δεν υπάρχει αρκετή Αφρική μέσα της", o Peter Gabriel ασχολείται με αυτού του είδους μουσικούς εδώ και δεκαετίες με πολλούς και διάφορους τρόπους ενώ David Byrne με την εταιρεία του Luaka Bop εξερευνά τα άδυτα της βραζιλιάνικης μουσικής ιστορίας και o Ginger Baker βρήκε εδώ και τρεις δεκαετίες μόνιμο "σπίτι" στην Αφρική. Η μουσική αυτή δε τυχαίνει προβολής στην Ελλάδα γιατί δεν είναι Tendy-Hip και δεν συνοδεύεται από in fashion lifestyle. Η μουσική αυτή ζει και αναπνέει στους δρόμους και ως τέτοια δεν έχει καμία ανάγκη, επιβιώνει θα επιβιώνει γιατί αποτελεί μέρος και προϊόν της ψυχής των πιο απλών ανθρώπων.
Love Movement Μας έρχεται από την Νότια Αφρική με το "The One Love Movement On Bando Biko Street'" από την εταιρεία Galo. Καταξιωμένη εδώ και χρόνια στη διεθνή σκηνή, με αυτό το άλμπουμ δηλώνει με τον πιο δυνατό τρόπο ότι το apartheid ήταν η ολοκληρωτική απογύμνωση της Νοτιοαφρικανικης κουλτούρας. Από τον τίτλο κιόλας καταλαβαίνει κάποιος ότι γίνεται αναφορά στον Steve Biko τον ηγέτη του South African Black Consciousness Movement, θύμα του apartheid. Υπέροχη φωνή δυνατές συνθέσεις από μια σπουδαία καλλιτέχνη. "Africans became shadows of who they used to be and my personal protest is to change this" αναφέρει σε μια από τις τελευταίες της συνεντεύξεις δίνοντας το σαφή προσανατολισμό αυτού του άλμπουμ.
