NORMAN WHITFIELD

Γεννήθηκε στην Νέα Υόρκη το 1943 και πέθανε στις 16 Σεπτεμβρίου του 2008 στο Λος Άντζελες. Υπήρξε ο σπουδαιότερος από τους αρχιτέκτονες του ήχου της Motown (1962-1975) και ένας από τους κυριότερους εκπροσώπους της Psychedelic Soul, με τους καταπληκτικούς Undisputed Truth να ηχογραφούν το 1976 στην εταιρεία του, Whitfield Records, το άλμπουμ "Method to the Madness". Έως το 1981 υπογράφουν και κυκλοφορούν άλμπουμ στην W.R.  ονόματα όπως Rose Royce, Mammatapee, Spyder Turner, Willie Hutch, Jr. Walker, Nytro και Masterpiece. Με τους Roce Royce και το single "Car Wash" γράφει την μεγαλύτερη επιτυχία του στην μετά Motown εποχή.

Gladys Knight & The Pips, Edwin Starr, Rare Earth είναι μερικά από τα ονόματα που του οφείλουν το σημαντικότερο μέρος της καριέρας τους. Norman Whitfield RIP.

Σε παλαιότερη ανάρτηση (29/05/08) σας είχαμε επιστήσει την προσοχή για το ντοκιμαντέρ Wild Combination: A Portrait Of Arthur Russell με θέμα τη ζωή του μεγάλου σύνθετη-μουσικού Arthur Russell. Εμβληματική προσωπικότητα της Νέας Υόρκης πέθανε από Aids το 1992. Ο σκηνοθέτης του ντοκιμαντέρ Matt Wolf επ` ευκαιρία της προβολής του στο Λονδίνο αύριο 26/9/2008 δίνει συνέντευξη στο συντάκτη Andy Thomas του περιοδικού Shook:

With the forthcoming London premiere and launch party of the Arthur Russell documentary WILD COMBINATION at the ICA on 26 September 2008, we thought we’d give you Andy Thomas’ interview with the director Matt Wolf.

SHK: What did you think when you first heard Arthur’s music?

Matt Wolf (MW): I got obsessed pretty immediately. But I was planning on getting obsessed, you could say. I was so compelled by an initial description of Arthur—gay Buddhist-cellist from Oskaloosa runs away to New York to become disco auteur. The music fulfilled those wild expectations.

SHK: Who were the documentary makers who inspired you

MW: This kind of stylized, reconstructive documentary filmmaking is most clearly related to Errol Morris. I’m also inspired by the filmmaker Issac Julien, who was showing a film about a filmmaker named Derek Jarman at the Berlinale, but became known for an experimental portrait of the poet Langston Hughes. I’m also enormously inspired by experimental and narrative filmmakers like Todd Haynes, Charlie Atlas, the list is endless!

SHK: We loved footage of The Gallery. Where did this come from?

MW: The footage is really precious and was shot by a film student at the Gallery in the 1970s. Now the disco pioneer and founder of The Gallery, DJ Nicky Siano, has it.

SHK: What do you think Arthur found in clubs like the Gallery and the Loft. How did they inspire him?

MW: I think it was the social experience of people coming together and dancing that intrigued Arthur. The way people responded to music and what made them dance preoccupied Arthur. At these early clubs, the quality of sound was also extremely refined. I think Arthur saw clubs as incredible listening environments and social laboratories...>>>>>>>>>>>ShooK Mag

Ο "Síndico" ( Concierge - κάτι σαν επιστάτης) όπως τον αποκαλούσε ο Jorge Ben. Ο πατέρας της Βραζιλιάνικης Soul. Ξεκίνησε την καριέρα του ως ντράμερ αλλά γρήγορα τον κέρδισε η κιθάρα. Το 1957 δημιουργεί τους Os Sputniks ένα rock group με τους Roberto και Erasmo Carlos (έναν από τους ηγέτες του πρώτου κύματος της Βραζιλιάνικης Rock). Το 1959 μετακομίζει στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες όπου σπουδάζει Αγγλικά και μυείται στον υπέροχο κόσμο της Soul ως τραγουδιστής πλέον των The Ideals. Το 1969 η επιτυχία του ντουέτου του με την σπουδαιότερη μορφή της Βραζιλιάνικης μουσικής σκηνής την Elis Regina, για το υπέροχο "These Are The Songs", του προσφέρει ένα συμβόλαιο με την Polydor και το 1971 κυκλοφορεί το άλμπουμ "Tim Maia". Έως το 1973 ηχογραφεί τέσσερα άλμπουμ με τον ίδιο τίτλο. Σ` αυτό του 1973 υπάρχει το υπέροχο Reu Confensso ένα all time classic της Brazilian Soul . Έως το 1998 όπου κατά την διάρκεια ενός show στο Teatro Municipal de Niterói κατέρρευσε (για να πεθανει μια εβδομαδα αργοτερα), ηχογραφούσε συνεχώς. Το τελευταίο του άλμπουμ κυκλοφόρησε την μοιραία χρονιά με τίτλο Tim Maia A Vivo II. Εύγλωττος, ειλικρινής, αντιδραστικός, με απίστευτο χιούμορ, κυνηγημένος από τις δισκογραφικές εταιρείες και δυστυχώς εθισμένος για χρόνια στην κοκαΐνη και την μαριχουάνα ο Tim Maia θα είναι για πάντα ένας από τους πιο σπουδαίους καλλιτέχνες που ανέδειξε πότε η Βραζιλία.

Brotherman, OST from Final Solution. Το soundtrack Brotherman είναι άλλη μια εκπληκτική παραγωγή της Numero Records, μουσική για μια ταινία που δεν ολοκληρώθηκε ποτέ όπως πολλές εκείνης της εποχής στα μέσα της δεκαετίας του εβδομήντα στην έκρηξη του Blaxploitation. Παρ` όλα αυτά εμείς εδώ έχουμε να κάνουμε με ένα group τους Final Soloution που μέχρι σήμερα ήταν σχεδόν άγνωστο, οι John Banks, Allen Brown, Darrow και Ronnie Kennedy, ηχογραφούσαν κάτω από διαφορετικά ονόματα οπως Kelderons στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του εξήντα ενώ αργότερα ως Kaldirons στις αρχές των seventies κυκλοφόρησαν ένα καταπληκτικό single στην Twinight Label το '' To Love Someone (That Don`t Love You)''. H επιτυχία όμως δεν ήρθε πότε παρ`ολο που οι Kaldirons παρέμεναν ένα από τα πιο διάσημα groups των clubs του Chicago West Side. To `71 αλλάζουν πάλι το όνομά τους σε Final Solution και ενώνουν τις δυνάμεις τους με τον συμμαθητή τους από το κολέγιο κιθαρίστα και συνθέτη Carl Wolfolk. Ήταν τόσο μεγάλη η επιθυμία τους για την επιτυχία του soundtrack που τους είχαν αναθέσει, που προτού ξεκινήσουν τα γυρίσματα της ταινίας άρχισαν να συνθέτουν τα κομμάτια της μουσικής της. Το project βγήκε εκτός bagget και η μουσική της ταινίας στα ράφια του studio. Σήμερα η Numero Records κυκλοφόρησε το soundtrack αποδεικνύοντας για άλλη μια φορά ότι η μουσικές για της ταινίες του Blaxploitation ήταν πολύ πιο σπουδαιότερες από τις ίδιες τις ταινίες αυτές.
Ιστορίες για σπουδαίους καλλιτέχνες που πίστεψαν στην επιτυχία αλλά πότε δεν τα κατάφεραν. Η επιτυχία και σπουδαιότητα δεν πάνε πάντα μαζί.

MULATU ASTATKE & EITHER ORCHESTRA

Mulatu Astatke. Ο γίγαντας της Αιθιοπίας . Ο βασιλιάς της Ethio-Jazz. Γεννημένος το 1945 στην δυτική πόλη της Αιθιοπίας Jimma. Σπούδασε στα καλύτερα μουσικά πανεπιστήμια του κόσμου και ήταν ο πρώτος Αφρικανός σπουδαστής στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Berkley στις ΗΠΑ. Στην Ελλαδα άγνωστος έως ότου οι περισσότεροι τον γνωρίσουν από το Soundtrack της ταινίας Broken Flowers του Jim Jarmusch. Ο Mulatu Astatke ανήκει σε μια κατηγορία μουσικών οι οποίοι στην Ελλάδα είναι υπό εξορία, εκτός των μουσικών περιοδικών (εξαιρέσεις λίγες που υπάρχουν για να επιβεβαιώνουν τον κανόνα) εκτός των ''trendy'' εκτός και των ''ψαγμένων". Μόνο αν κάποιο θαύμα συμβεί κάποιοι θα ασχοληθούν μαζί τoυς. Στον υπόλοιπο κόσμο τα πράγματα είναι διαφορετικά, ο Brian Eno ο νονός της Εlectonica, δηλώνει "η σύγχρονη μουσική έχει πρόβλημα και το το πρόβλημα αυτό εντοπίζεται στο ότι δεν υπάρχει αρκετή Αφρική μέσα της", o Peter Gabriel ασχολείται με αυτού του είδους μουσικούς εδώ και δεκαετίες με πολλούς και διάφορους τρόπους ενώ David Byrne με την εταιρεία του Luaka Bop εξερευνά τα άδυτα της βραζιλιάνικης μουσικής ιστορίας και o Ginger Baker βρήκε εδώ και τρεις δεκαετίες μόνιμο "σπίτι" στην Αφρική. Η μουσική αυτή δε τυχαίνει προβολής στην Ελλάδα γιατί δεν είναι Tendy-Hip και δεν συνοδεύεται από in fashion lifestyle. Η μουσική αυτή ζει και αναπνέει στους δρόμους και ως τέτοια δεν έχει καμία ανάγκη, επιβιώνει θα επιβιώνει γιατί αποτελεί μέρος και προϊόν της ψυχής των πιο απλών ανθρώπων.

LEGENDARY DETROIT JAZZ COLLECTIVE REUNITED!


Το νέο άλμπουμ αναμένεται σε παράγωγη του σπουδαίου Carl Graig και ο τίτλος του δεν έχει ακόμα αποφασιστεί. Σε αναμονή λοιπόν για ένα απο τα σπουδαιότερα άλμπουμ των τελευταίων χρόνων!



Bio & Ifo : 1971, in Detroit, trombonist Phil Ranelin and saxophonist Wendell Harrison started a band, a recording company, and a magazine, and called them the Tribe. This legendary political, social, and aesthetic collective also included key members like drummer Doug Hammond, trumpeter Marcus Belgrave and others.
The collective released a number of highly collectable albums including records like Phil Ranelin's "Vibes From The Tribe," Marcus Belgrave's "Gemini II," Harold McKinney's "Voices And Rhythms Of The Creative Profile," Doug Hammond and David Durrah's "Sea of Nurnen," and Wendell Harrison's "An Evening with the Devil" - many of these releases have been reissued or licensed in the US, Europe and Japan by labels like Hefty, Soul Jazz, P Vine and Ubiquity. Given the broad nature and appeal of these recordings they have become highly praised and sort out by collectors of jazz, funk and electronic music. Interviewing Wendell Harrison in 2001 Jazz Times said the label “packed a strong musical punch remarkable for its unorthodoxy.”
Tribe like Sun Ra throughout his career (releasing records on his own EL Saturn), Max Roach and Charles Mingus in the early 60s (releasing their own music), Stanley Cowell and Charles Tolliver with their Strata East collective in New York, the AACM collective in Chicago (Braxton, The Art Ensemble of Chicago and many more), the Black Artists Group in St. Louis and the Underground Musicians' Association in Los Angeles (Horace Tapscott and associates), defined the very meaning of independent spirit and community in jazz. Few people in the Detroit area music scene have been untouched in some shape or form by the influence and impact of Tribe. The House, Techno and Hip Hop generation among them.
In spring 2007, internationally respected innovative producer Carl Craig re-assembled the remaining core living original members of the Tribe collective all still heavily active nationally and internationally and still very much in contact with other - Wendell Harrison (still living and working in Detroit), Phil Ranelin (now living and working in Los Angeles), Marcus Belgrave (still living in Detroit) and Doug Hammond (now living in Germany). In Craig’s newly refined Detroit Studio a brand new collective album started to take shape. The record will feature classic Tribe material including a brand new arrangement of the Tribe classic “Vibes from The Tribe,” as well as new compositions written especially for the record.

AMP FIDDLER / SLY & ROBBIE

Η συμμορία "Sly Dunbar & Robbie Shakespeare" επιστρέφει με νέο μέλος τον Amp Fiddler τον οποίο γνώρισαν από τον Bootsy Collins της άλλης μεγάλης συμμορίας αυτής της Parlia-Funkadelic. Το άλμπουμ Amp Fiddler/Sly & Robbie "Inspiration Information" κυκλοφορεί στης 28 Οκτωμβριου 2008! Στο άλμπουμ υπάρχουν φωτογραφίες του σπουδαίου Αμερικανού φωτογράφου Wonder Knack και ένα υπέροχο cd booklet με πληροφορίες για την παραγωγή.


Info:"The tracks are never predictable, at times echoing Sly & Robbie’s ‘80s days with Island Records at Compass Point studios, at others structured around more mood-based keyboard pads and new patterns re-inventing the established dancehall template. “It’s been amazing – the level of musicianship is sky high,” explains Amp. “Sly & Robbie work so well together – everything has happened really smoothly.” Within the sessions, the trio honed both new compositions and covers, including a pertinent re-work of a George Clinton-era classic, ‘Paint The White House Black’ re-titled by Sly as ‘Black House’. They also revisited select tracks from Amp’s ‘Waltz Of A Ghetto Fly’ album from 2004, with Amp favourites like ‘I Believe In You’ re-worked over a lilting reggae base. The album was mixed in London by another original Island Records studio regular, Godwin Logie, complete with extra dub versions of selected tracks worked live off the desk."

Άλλη μια σπουδαία κυκλοφορία από την Yoruba Records, το νέο άλμπουμ "Return To Forever" από τον Jimmy Abney, μια συλλογή με τις καλύτερες στιγμές του καλλιτέχνη από το παρελθόν, ακυκλοφόρητα κομμάτια και μερικές από τις πιο πρόσφατες ηχογραφήσεις του. Ο Jimmy Abney ηχογραφεί από τα μέσα της δεκαετίας του ογδόντα σε μια πολύ δύσκολη εποχή όπου το New JacK Swing το Hip Hop και τα Girl Groups επικρατούν κατά κράτος στην μαύρη μουσική σκηνή και δεν αφήνουν κανένα περιθώριο για επιτυχία σε καλλιτέχνες όπως ο Abney. Μια δεκαπενταετία αργότερα ο Abney επιστρέφει με την βοήθεια του Osunlande και μας προσφέρει ένα άλμπουμ σαν αυτά της Soul των 70`ς που πραγματικά έλιωναν στο pic-up γιατί μιλούσαν κατευθείαν στην καρδία.

Siji Biography: "The second born of twelve children to Nigerian émigrés in London, Siji spent much of his early childhood in Lagos and London before coming to the US to further pursue his musical ambitions. His own cultural heritage combined with the political and social movements of the age, exposed young Siji to the insurgent, politicized music of the Afrobeat legends Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Tony Allen as well as the soulful grooves of Marvin Gaye, Al Green, and Otis Redding. His parents, in particular, his father, loved music, but like most children of hardworking immigrants, Siji was urged by them to pursue a career in the professional fields of medicine or law. But the lure of the music was too strong. In the nineties, when London was bursting at the seams with new music and groups like Loose Ends, Soul II Soul, and D-Influence dominated the scene, Siji’s attention was captured and he began to follow his passion for making and recording his own music."

FELA ANIKULAPO KUTI & ROY AYERS

By the beginning of the eighties, Fela Anikulapo Kuti and Roy Ayers had already reached the peaks of their careers. Ayers found his style by migrating from Jazz's strict discipline to his unmistakable blend of jazz, soul and funk while Kuti created a new musical genre : Afro-Beat by updating African music's sound with American funkinfluences. Music fans must have frantically anticipated the coming together of the two maestros on this "Music of Many Colours" that features the co-produced "2000, blacks got to be free" and "Africa-Centre Of The World". The music is dashingly brillant : Fela's afro centrist groove completely rejuvenates Ayers' take on American Soul and R&B. You can't help being taken over by the vindicative tone and musical tornado of this LP.
